Our Dairy Journal
In preparation for winter, the Loleta Cheese Dairy crew is busy preparing the shavings lots for the cows. Due to the rainy weather we have here in Humboldt County, our cows are housed indoors in order to protect them from the weather and to make them comfortable, warm and dry. A shavings lot is an area where a combination of earth, gravel, and ash has been piled up so that it drains well. It is then covered with a thick layer of wood shavings or shredded bark. These areas give the cows a relatively dry and clean place to lie down between milkings. The dairy crew is also busy fixing the barn roofs, gutters, and doing general maintenance that will keep the cows happy during the winter months..
