A Typical Day . . .
On The Loleta Cheese Coffee Creek Dairy.

Cheese is one of the most versitile, natural, and nutritional foods we have the pleasure of enjoying. Have you ever wondered where it all starts? Let's walk through a typical day on the farm.

1:00 a.m. - The milkers arrive (Yes . . . we did say 1:00 AM!)

  1. They lay down all the hay that the cows will eat after milking.
  2. The lead milker will sanitize all of the milking equipment in the barn.
  3. The milker goes out to gather the cows.

2:00 a.m. - Milking begins

3:00 a.m. - Third milker arrives to assist in the barn

6:00 a.m. - The outside staff arrives (We're not done yet . . . the day is just beginning!)

  1. They move cows out to pasture.
  2. Bottle-feed the calves' milk.
  3. Move irrigation pipes (summertime).
  4. Check on the cows for any health problems/assist cows with calving.
  5. Clean the cow's bedding.

7:30 a.m. - Milkers finish milking and cleaning the milk barn

8:00 a.m. - Milk truck arrives to transport milk to the cheese factory

9:30 a.m. - Breeder arrives to artificially inseminate cows/heifers

11:00 a.m. - Outside crew goes to lunch

12:00 p.m. - Afternoon milkers arrive (Here we go again!)

  1. They mix feed and fill the feeding bunks.
  2. Bring the cows back to the barn to eat their rations of grain and alfalfa.
  3. Lead milker will clean the milk tanks; work on maintenance and prepare/sanitize the milk barn for the next milking.
  4. Second milker will clean the bedding for the dry cows.

1:00 p.m. - Outside crew comes back from lunch

  1. Basic maintenance: fix fences, haul manure, animal health checks/care
  2. Checking on calves and moving them to different pens as they graduate through the different stages of their young lives.

2:00 p.m. - Second milking for the day begins

3:30 p.m. Outside crew feed calves

  1. Move the irrigation pipes (summertime).
